Architect Blair Johnston of Warren & Mahoney has a soft spot for an alpine lodge in the deep south, set between Lakes Wanaka and Hawea
“SILVERPINE LODGE SITS high up on a dramatic, narrow neck of land in Central Otago between Lakes Hawea and Wanaka. It s a powerful, isolated, and distinctly New Zealand landscape, and designing within it requires a sensitive and steady hand, provided in this instance by the inimitable Peter Beaven. On approach, the lodge sits comfortably below the ridgeline, its simple form pyiing homage to the New Zealand rural vernacular of the functional and the utilitarian – the wool store, th shearing shed, the farm house.
But this unassuming exterior gives little indication of the richness of the soaring interior spaces: Matai, totara, kauri, silverpine, Canadian Oregon and Baltic pine are combined with schist stone floors and rammed earth walls in a surprisingly cohesive and tactile experience. It stimulates a very real desire to run your hand over the surfaces.
The living area and bedrooms are aligned to provide outlook over the lake, while the high volumes of the entry and dining hall frame unexpected but no less spectacular views of the surrounding hillside. The lightness of these double-height spaces is anchored by the massive rammed-earth walls, the raw material taken from the site itself. This is a building which is literally of its place, a fine example of how to build within such an iconic landscape.”
Four spacious, luxurious ensuite rooms comprise the guest wing. Quartz floors (with subfloor heating) and panoramic (double glazed) windows are a conduit to the massive outdoors. The finest cotton, wool and natural fibres ensure your sleeping comfort. Natural, sensitive, New Zealand-made lotions and washes are yours in the bathrooms. The dining hall, adjacent to the leather-furnished guest living room looks out over the lake, and next to this is the huge kitchen - Sue’s domain. In pride of place is the immense, ancient, iron wood-fired Aga stove, swapped to Mike for a bottle of whisky.
Each bedroom has its own ensuite, covered in natural tiles of porcelain and quartz, with a separate bath and shower. A window seat and French doors frame uninterrupted views of Lake Hawea. Furnishings are made from native timbers such as silverpine, matai, kauri, and totara. The walls breathe through the natural plaster of gypsum. Superking sized or king twin beds have natural sheepskin underlays, covered by 100% cotton sheets, merino wool blanket, and feather duvet. During the cooler winter months, underfloor heating warm the rooms.
A small refreshment of Antipodes sparkling water and a New Zealand made passionfruit chocolate bar sit on the desk, next to a vase of fresh flowers.
We left our television behind in the last century. You’re only connection to the technological world is via our library computer, which is on dial up – some guests bring their satellite phones.
