American River - American River is a small town tucked into native bush overlooking Eastern Cove and Pelican Lagoon. The bird life is prolific and in season many species of wildflowers can be seen. Sheltered coastal waters and nearby deserted beaches offer wonderful opportunities for fishing, great walking and swimming. American River gained its name from American sealers, some of whom built a trading schooner (from native timber) in 1804 at Independence Point on Pelican Lagoon. This was the beginning of the area’s shipbuilding history which was continued on by John Buick and Frank Potts in 1842. They were also the first to have farmed the area and their descendants still reside in the district. Salt was needed by the sealers to presere skins. The salt lakes in the area provided the best available salt and an industry which employed hundreds, resulting in a settlement, port and the Island’s only railway at Muston on Pelican Lagoon. Gypsum from these lakes was exported from Ballast Head until 1992.

Seashells apartment 2 is one of four self-contained apartments in Kingscote which are all individually let - some for holiday, others for long-term rental. We have set our 3 bedroom apartment up so it is comfortable for a hassle-free holiday. The open plan design gives a great sense of freedom and tiled floor throughout the living area makes it easy care. The 3 bedroom apartment caters for up to 6 people with 2 double bedrooms and 1 twin room. The location in the Island’s main town means you can dine out when you wish - but you also have the choice of cooking for yourselves in the kitchen provided. The apartment is presented for your stay with all beds made up with linen provided. Quality furniture throughout make for a relaxing visit. Reverse cycle air-conditioning means you are comfortable year round. Local artists grace the walls of the living areas giving the apartment a strong sense of place. The kitchen has a full size fridge, electric oven and cooktop, and dishwasher so you do not waste too much time washing up. There are plenty of built-in cupboards with all cooking utensils and other equipment provided. We have a starter kit of tea/coffee, sugar and milk.The kitchen spills over into an open plan dining and lounge area. The dining room table seats 6 and the leather sofas arranged for watching television, DVDs or videos. A radio and CD player is also provided. What would a holiday be without a barbeque in the backyard. There is a large stainless steel Heatlie barbeque all set for a feast and an outdoor table and chairs to enjoy it. The check in time on your day of arrival is 2.00 pm and check out on departure is 10.00 am. These times must be kept in order for the property to be serviced. During off peak periods, early check in or late departure may be possible with prior approval - please contact us if required. Unapproved late departures will be charged at the daily tariff plus additional cleaning costs if the cleaners are required to re-visit the property. Linen is provided including bath towels. We do not include beach towels, so please remember to bring these if you intend on visiting our beautiful beaches. Our apartment is equipped for a maximum of six (6) guests. It is against Health Department regulations for more persons to occupy a property than there are beds to accommodate them. No mattresses, tents or caravans, or more cars than the property accommodates are allowed. If the apartment is found to be overloaded, you will have to vacate without refund. Our apartment is strictly non-smoking and an additional cleaning fee of $125.00 applies to any booking where guests have been smoking indoors. The back verandah has seating and an ashtray to cater for smokers. Our community diverts more than 70% of waste from landfill. Please assist by sorting waste according to the information provided in the apartment. Please remove all garbage from the apartment and place in the bins. Collection day is Wednesday, so please place the bins on the kerbside for collection with the handle facing the property. Any excess waste can be taken to the Kangaroo Island Waste Depot and deposited free of charge.
